La Mer de Glace

Mer de Glace or the “Sea of Ice” is a 200-metre thick and 7.5km long glacier on the slopes of Mont Blanc. It’s the second longest glacier in the Alps and the largest in France. It originates from the convergence of the Glacier du Tacul and the Glacier de Leschaux at an elevation of more than 2,000 metres. With its deep chasms and irregular ridges, the glacier surface looks like frozen waves. Every year, the glacier is getting 30 cm thinner, possibly due to the effects of global warming.
